Join Shanghai-born, SCAD alumnus Caomin "Alan" Xie (M.F.A., painting, 2001) as he discusses the influences of Buddhism and architecture in his art. The mandala, a geometric figure representing the universe in Buddhist and Hindu symbolism, is a reoccurring theme in his work and is also a prominent motif featured in designs by Chinese couturière Guo Pei, whose first U.S. solo museum exhibition, "Guo Pei: Couture Beyond," is on view at SCAD FASH through March 4.
Xie states that the mandala "embodies the Buddhist concepts of creation, dwelling, destruction and emptiness. When we are confronting the stupendous creative and destructive powers of today’s technology, for me, mandala is the best visual metaphor of our world.”
Alexandra Sachs, executive director of SCAD FASH and Atlanta exhibitions, will lead a discussion after the presentation.
This event is free for museum members, as well as SCAD students, faculty and staff with a valid SCAD Card. Open to the public with the cost of museum admission.
