SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film welcomes fashion luminary Audrey Smaltz in conversation with celebrated journalist Gail O’Neill. Smaltz has worked as a model, a fashion show commentator for the Ebony Fashion Fair, an editor, and the founder and CEO of The Ground Crew, a fashion show production company based in New York. From writing for Ebony magazine, Vogue, Mirabella, and Women’s Wear Daily, to couture shopping trips to Paris with Eunice Johnson in the 1970s, to working with top New York fashion designers, Smaltz has witnessed the evolution of the industry.
Joined by O’Neill, also a former model, who worked with the late fashion designer Patrick Kelly, Smaltz shares her experiences across five decades of fashion, discusses the significance of the Ebony Fashion Fair, and offers advice to those just entering the fashion world.
The conversation coincides with the exhibition Patrick Kelly, The Journey, on view at SCAD FASH through Jan. 3, 2021. The exhibition features collages and sculptural works by renowned artist Derrick Adams in tribute to Kelly’s life and legacy. Kelly’s garments were regularly included in the Ebony Fashion Fair. The SCAD FASH exhibition features a large-scale mural that references Kelly’s designs shown at the historic fair.
