Reveal the hidden histories of undergarments at 'Mentioning the Unmentionables'

Event

Join Sarah Collins, professor of fashion at SCAD, and Rafael Gomes, director of fashion exhibitions, as they discuss the history of undergarments. Underwear has its roots in a remote or rather ancient past and, like both society and culture at large, has changed over time and into the present. Women’s bodies, too, have been subject to the changing aesthetic canons of each era. Have we finally reached an age inclusive of a variety of bodies, personalities, abilities, and ideals? Hear about the journey to today’s freedom to feel and look the way we are, not what society tells us to be, as Gomes and Collins examine undergarments from the museum’s permanent collection and share how the corsets, petticoats, crinolines, girdles, and bras of the past create the fashionable silhouette of each era.

This event is open to SCAD FASH members and SCAD Card holders only. Become a member today.
