Join SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film and artist Trine Søndergaard for an evening reception celebrating the exhibition "Guldnakke." On view Feb. 19 through July 28, 2019, the exhibition showcases Søndergaard’s photographic series of contemporary women wearing traditional Danish guldnakke from the 19th century.
A guldnakke, which translates as "golden neck," is an intricately embroidered women’s hat, or bonnet, fashionable among the wives of wealthy farmers and worn as a symbol of status among the peasant class. These gilded bonnets hold a special meaning in the social history of Denmark: until the mid-1800s, textiles made of gold thread or gold beads were created solely for the royalty, nobility and the church. SCAD FASH presents nine photographs from the series alongside a vintage guldnakke from the university’s permanent collection and four on loan from the Furesø Museer, Farum, Denmark.
Søndergaard is a Danish photography-based visual artist. The artist’s work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions around the world and is represented in major public and museum collections, including at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla, León, Spain; Gothenburg Museum of Art, Sweden; National Museum of Norway, Oslo; Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris, France; and ARoS, Aarhus, Denmark. Søndergaard is a member of the Danish Artists Society and the Artists Association Grøningen. She has completed public commissions for museums and cultural institutions and has published books with Steidl, Hatje Cantz and Hassla Books. This event is free and open to the public and part of SCAD deFINE ART 2019, held Feb. 26–28 at university locations in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia.
