Transport yourself to 'Fashion in Film: Gilbert Adrian and The Wizard of Oz'

Event

Assistant director of fashion exhibitions Christina Frank and SCAD professor Sydney Bacenas discuss the costumes and visual storytelling in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, which bears the fashionable influence of Gilbert Adrian’s aesthetic. Head of costume design at MGM from 1928 to 1941, Adrian designed costumes for more than 200 films, dressing stylish stars such as Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, and Norma Shearer before leaving Hollywood to establish his own atelier, renowned for impeccably tailored suits.

Adrian’s suits are intricately detailed, with mitered stripes, clever seaming, and unexpected appliqués. Now on view at SCAD FASH in the exhibition Masters of Cut, Adrian’s generation-defining silhouettes are presented in dialogue with body-celebrating designs by Azzedine Alaïa, a devoted collector of Adrian’s work. Pairing their garments, the exhibition reveals the designers’ intertwined and enduring legacies.
