See culture-shifting characters at online tour of 'Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design'

Tour

Join SCAD FASH assistant director of fashion exhibitions Christina Frank for an exclusive virtual tour of the museum’s new exhibition Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design

Carter’s unparalleled ability to create fully realized, dimensional characters through her costumes has made her one of the most sought-after and renowned designers today. Known for her research and creativity, she has been honored with an Emmy Award, two Academy Award nominations, and the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for the film Black Panther. She is the first Black woman to receive this honor.

SCAD FASH is proud to present more than 60 costumes, as well as sketches and ephemera illustrating Carter’s in-depth historical research and design process for each project, demonstrating the varied work she brings to the screen.

About the exhibition
Academy Award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter harnesses the power of visual storytelling to share vital narratives exploring culture, race, and politics. Creating costumes for generation-defining films like Black Panther, Selma, and Do the Right Thing, she brings vibrancy, nuance, color, and texture to each culture-shifting role. Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design features unforgettable designs from nearly four decades of Carter’s career within an Afrofuturistic installation incorporating original artwork by SCAD alum Brandon Sadler, whose murals were prominently featured in Black Panther
