Join SCAD FASH for an illuminating dialogue on Dorothea Towles Church, the era-defining model whose presence in 1950s Paris challenged the global fashion hierarchy. While the American industry remained stifled by segregation, Church found transformative liberation in the ateliers of Christian Dior and Elsa Schiaparelli — and the houses found their muse. Her ascent was not an isolated triumph, but a defining chapter in the legacy of Black American women who redefined “Parisian” elegance and claimed the city as a sanctuary for intellectual and creative agency.
Moderated by SCAD FASH executive director Alex Delotch Davis, the conversation features Danny Dunson, the DuSable Black History Museum’s director of curatorial services and community partnerships, and editorial director and filmmaker Isoul Harris (HBO's Donyale Luna: Supermodel) who explore Church’s groundbreaking career through the lens of Dunson’s recent exhibition Black in Paris. Discover how Church and her contemporaries rewrote restricted beauty standards and established a blueprint for the modern fashion industry.
Tickets are $5 for members and the price of admission for the general public.
