Exhibition: 'Entering Modernity: 1920s Fashion from the Parodi Costume Collection'

The dawn of modernity in fashion after the turn of the 20th century is a story of the many forms of freedom — and the quest to represent a new sense of self. Following the global upheavals of World War I and the women’s suffrage movement, the Roaring ’20s witnessed radical social and sartorial transformation as a new generation emerged, liberated from the confinements of the past.

Travel back in bonheur to the era of Cristóbal Balenciaga’s 30-year Paris residency. Led by SCAD professors, attendees are invited to explore Balenciaga’s time in the French capital through a socio-artistic lens. From the surrealists of the late 1930s to the new epoch of Parisian couture ushered in by Christian Dior, discover the thrilling cultural context that inspired the couturier.

SCAD FASH welcomes members to celebrate the museum’s newest exhibition, Manish Arora: Life Is Beautiful. Renowned for dazzling designs in a rainbow of colors, Manish Arora has brought the talent and craftsmanship of India’s rich sartorial history to the global forefront, earning international acclaim on runways across three continents. Designing in India since the 1990s, Arora made his international debut in 2005 in London and just two years later began regularly showing at Paris Fashion Week.

Join fellow SCAD FASH members for the debut of Cristóbal Balenciaga: Master of Tailoring, an exhibition that accentuates the galvanizing impact of his couturier career. The evening includes a private reception and conversations with Fondation Azzedine Alaïa’s Gael Mamine; Balenciaga’s director of archives Gaspard de Massé; and Gonzalo Parodi, director of the Parodi Costume Collection in Miami, moderated by SCAD fashion historian Carmela Spinelli.
