'Horst P. Horst: Essence of the Times'

Horst P. Horst is one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. Known primarily for his fashion photography and portraiture, Horst assimilated tenets of surrealism and classicism into his unique compositions, creating striking, unforgettable images. With his first Vogue cover in 1935, Horst redefined the possibilities of fashion photography, inspiring a shift from hand-drawn illustrations to the full embrace of film by elite fashion magazines.

Watch 'Little Women' at Dressing the Icons series

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel from 1868, Little Women (1994) is the third film adaptation of the book and the first to be directed by a woman. Costume designer Colleen Atwood received an Academy Award nomination for her work. Atwood scoured auction houses and private collections for late 19th-century gowns, corsets, and accessories. The pieces that were created new for the film adhered to strict rules regarding historical accuracy — no zippers and all garments were worn with the proper undergarments!

—André Leon Talley (1948–2022)
